Day 1: Photo Walk: How to Operate a 35mm Analog Camera

Course Contents:

This course offers basic instructions for how to operate a 35mm camera including:

  • The basic functions of a 35mm camera: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO
  • How to read a light meter
  • How to modify camera settings to best suit the subject matter at hand
  • Photo exercises: documenting movement, experimenting with depth of focus, portraiture
  • How to create strong, dynamic compositions

The first hour of this course will consist of camera demonstration and instruction. The remainder of the course will entail a group photo walk around Kreuzberg applying the skills learned during this session. Please bring your own 35mm manual analog camera and shoes that are comfortable for walking. Film will be provided.

Day 2: B&W Film Development: Introduction to Black and White Film Processing

Course contents:

This course teaches students the basics for developing their own film, including how to read a
film development chart, how to manage and store their chemicals, and how to archive their
negatives.

  • Market overview and differences between available film types
  • Choosing the right film for every occasion
  • Development of film
  • Consulting for film development in the home laboratory
  • Creating an analogue contact print
  • Photochemistry and negative sleeves provided

Day 3: B&W Darkroom Printing: Introduction to work in the analog darkroom

Course contents:
Theoretical and practical introduction to working in a darkroom

On Sunday there will be two printing groups, one of them will start printing, while the other will complete a list of photo exercises to conduct while they are waiting their turn in the darkroom

  • Handling of photographic chemicals, materials and laboratory equipment
  • Evaluation and selection of negatives for printing
  • Making a contact sheet
  • Making your first handmade prints from negatives on black and white photo paper (Fiber
  • Paper)
  • Introduction to basic printing techniques such as dodging and burning
